How to study with a friend online, even long distance
Studying next to a friend makes it easier to start and harder to quit. When they're in another city, or another time zone, you can still get most of that feeling.
First, agree on three things
- When you start (in both time zones, if they differ).
- How long a round is: 25 or 50 minutes are common.
- What each of you will do. One line each, sent before you begin.
Five ways to study together from far away
1. A video call with the sound off
FaceTime, Discord or Zoom, cameras optional, microphones muted. Talk at the breaks. It feels the most "together", but it ties up a screen and it's easy to start chatting.
2. The same timer, no call
Text "go", both start a timer at the same moment, and send one line when it rings: what you got done. Light, and it works with any amount of time difference.
3. A study server or study room
Many Discord servers have rooms where people study with cameras or screens on. Go in together and pick the same room.
4. The same study-with-me stream
Open the same livestream or video at the same time and follow its timer and breaks.
5. Focus together in Pobbo
Add your friend once with a one-time 6-digit code (it lasts 24 hours). Then invite them into your session, or join theirs from their page. You each see both buddies working at the table in your own room, and the session ends at the same second for both of you. It works across countries, and one friend is free; Pobbo+ adds more, up to 1,000. Afterwards your buddies can visit each other's homes, unless one of them is asleep: a buddy who's sleeping in their own time zone doesn't go visiting, but focusing together still works.
For long-distance couples and best friends
- Find the hour that overlaps and keep it: a short round every day beats a long one sometimes.
- Keep the rounds short (25 minutes) so neither of you gives up a whole evening.
- Have one small ritual at the end: a message, a sticker, a visit to each other's buddy.
When it stops working
- You keep chatting: move from a call to a shared timer.
- One of you keeps cancelling: shorten the round instead of skipping it.
- Phones keep winning: close the distracting apps while you focus (see how to block apps while you study).
Questions
Do we need to be on a call to focus together in Pobbo?
No. You only see each other's buddies at the table; there's no chat, no camera and no microphone.
Does my friend need Pobbo+?
No. Every account can have one friend for free, and focusing together is free.
What if we're in different time zones?
It still works: the session ends at the same second for both of you. Only visits wait until both buddies are awake.
Pobbo is in a free public beta on iPhone and iPad (iOS 26, with the TestFlight app), and coming to the App Store.
